Reports indicated at the time that the 32-year-old was hit by a stray bullet fired from nearby, without knowing its source yet, with the possibility that the shooting in the air occurred during the funeral of one of the victims of the horrific Beirut Port explosion that occurred on August 4.
Several weeks ago, the player’s family submitted a complaint to the Lebanese judiciary to find out the circumstances of the accident.
“A sad morning for all the athletes … a great loss for Lebanese football. Muhammad Atwi is in the grace of God,” wrote a member of the Lebanese Federation and Secretary of the Al-Akhaa Al-Ahly Club Aley, Wael Chehayeb, on his Facebook page.
The President of the Lebanese Football Association, Hashem Haidar, mourned the “good player” Atwi in a statement to Agence France-Presse, considering that “it is a sad day for Lebanon in general and the Lebanese sport in particular, and we strongly condemn the phenomenon of intrusive weapons.”
Haider, who is a member of the Executive Committee of the Asian Football Confederation, added, “We call on the competent authorities to hold accountable the killers of this innocent spirit, and this matter will be pursued by us as an association, in addition to our standing by the family of the player Atwi.”
FIFA sent its “sincere condolences to the Lebanese football family on the departure of the Ansar Club and Lebanon national team player, Mohamed Atwi, who died on Friday morning after being hit by a stray bullet on August 21,” the post was attached to a picture of the player.
An eyewitness told Agence France-Presse on the day of the accident, on August 21, that Atwi “was in the Cola area in Beirut as he was finishing papers to buy a public license plate (taxi), and while he was talking to someone, he fell on the ground, unconscious, and was taken to hospital. Soon it was found that there was a bullet lodged in his head. ”
A large number of Atwi colleagues, especially Al-Ansar players, gathered in front of Al-Maqasid Hospital on Friday, waiting for his body to be transported and his funeral later.
