In a strange twist to the fate of a brand that was the original “Flagship Killer”, the first low-budget OnePlus phone in nearly five years – OnePlus Nord – is in the opposite direction, favoring modern aesthetics and general versatility over raw energy.
These two devices couldn’t be more different, but the prices are under $ 500. It is also ideal for buyers who want to have a premium experience at no additional cost.
But what is the right phone for you? Find out versus OnePlus Nord vs. iPhone SE.

Design and display
You will be forgiven for thinking that these phones are of different ages due to their designs. Let’s start with the iPhone. It is based on the iPhone 8 glass sandwich frame with front and back glass. This is surrounded by a metal frame. There’s a play button on the right, volume buttons, and an alert slider on the left, plus some big edges around the foreground above and below the screen (more on that later). You’ll find the capacitive fingerprint reader – or Touch ID, as Apple calls it – at the bottom of the screen, and doubling as the Home button.
Nord has a much more modern design than iPhone SE.
Relatively speaking, the Nord has a much more sophisticated design, although cheaper materials exist. The glass remains on both sides but a coated plastic rail surrounds the device. Nord has a similar button layout but with an alert slider (rare in the wider Android space) on the right side this time. The edges around the screen are much smaller than the iPhone SE thanks to the inclusion of a perforated camera. OnePlus has also integrated an in-screen optical scanner that looks more advanced on paper, but I found the iPhone SE’s Touch ID is faster and more reliable than the OnePlus reader.
The Nord features a more round and comfortable glass than the iPhone SE. However, since the Apple phone is much smaller, it will get a little easier in most people’s hands. The iPhone SE’s light design also helps in this regard, as the SE weighs 148 grams vs. 184 grams in Nord. IPhone SE also has IP67 water resistance. Unfortunately, OnePlus Nord does not come with any kind of official evaluation of water or dust resistance.
The speakers on both smartphones are completely different. Nord features one small and small unit next to the USB-C port. On the contrary, the iPhone SE paired the lower speaker with a magnifying earphone for a decent stereo effect. Despite its size, the iPhone SE provides clearer and more complete sound. Unfortunately, there is no phone with the headphone jack. This isn’t a big surprise, but it’s still a shame that many phones in this price range have a 3.5mm port.
The screen is another area where these phones differ. The iPhone SE has a very small 4.7-inch LCD screen with a maximum resolution of 1334 x 750. On the other hand, the Nord screen has a 6.44-inch OLED panel that provides 1080p resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. I won’t paint it, while the iPhone SE panel seems to have better quality control, the Nord display is infinitely better.
Performance, battery life, and software
While OnePlus Nord offers solid performance for its price range, iPhone SE steals the show in terms of initial horsepower. The dedicated A13 Bionic processor turns off Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G from Nord at peak performance, even if you choose the model with massive 12GB RAM.
With all that said, we supply very often Feel Faster thanks to its 90 Hz screen and all the smooth animations inside OxygenOS – the Android OnePlus chassis. Likewise, while the iPhone SE can technically outperform even the flagship of over $ 1,000 in Android in extreme performance shares, OnePlus Nord outperforms in continuous performance. Things get tough when comparing software for both phones, as monsters are still completely different for all similarities between Android and iOS. People will have their preferences and I am not here looking to convert any hard fans to any of the platforms.
Fortunately, both OnePlus’ takes on Android and iOS-on-a-budget experience on iPhone SE are equally great. OxygenOS is a feature-packed leather that allows a lot of customization to customize the phone according to your individual needs and needs. On the other hand, iOS takes full advantage of the Apple ecosystem with killer app support and continuity features with other Apple products. It also greatly benefits from dedicated devices within the iPhone SE. A great example of this is the amazing HDR results when capturing video.
It is also worth noting that Apple is doing much better in upgrading its phones to the latest version of iOS several years after the launch of the device. OnePlus is one of the best OEMs for long-term software support, but it only guaranteed two years of updates.
The iPhone SE turns off battery life.
OnePlus Nord on iPhone SE, however, may well showcase battery life, though. The first one has more than twice the battery capacity and almost doubled the charging power. This translates into real performance as well. IPhone SE will struggle to get 90% off today, while Nord will comfortably get me a full day based on the same use. This gap in battery endurance is only aggravated when playing.
IPhone SE has one battery feature though: you can charge it wirelessly. OnePlus recently launched its first phone with wireless charging, OnePlus 8 Pro, but this feature didn’t move to the middle of the ranger.
OnePlus Nord vs iPhone SE: camera
We did a full shootout between these two and handed over the vote to you, our readers. Although it has only one back camera compared to the triple Nord camera, the survey results have dropped significantly in favor of iPhone SE.
I wouldn’t dispute this result either: iPhone SE takes the crown so easy when it comes to camera performance. It is more consistent, better reveals highlights, and captures shadow detail more effectively from the north.
Here are some samples from each device. As you can see, Nord likes to introduce noise reduction. Low-light photos get more blurry with the phone wanting to crush all the noise.
IPhone SE captures more natural colors than just a few shots of grass and flowers. Pictures with the sky show this difference in color characteristics.
However, Nord comes in more focal lengths on both sides, allowing for greater versatility than the iPhone SE. If you want to shoot very broadly or macro, you will have to choose OnePlus Nord. Its camera app also comes with more modes like Nightscape and Pro mode, while iPhone camera app is the most abstract object affair. The pendulum swung in the other direction of the video though. IPhone has developed a reputation for capturing stunning video quality, the iPhone SE range to capture 4K 60fps, great stability, and HDR scans the floor with OnePlus Nord.
How do you compare prices?

OnePlus Nord vs iPhone SE: what should you buy?
Ultimately, which device fits your needs depends on what you want to get out of your phone.
IPhone SE has a host of performance quotas, a great back and front camera for its price, and will receive years of software support. You can’t really argue with a phone that gets stuck in the same main chip as the iPhone 11 Pro and comes with less than half the price. It is also one of the few remaining high-performance and compact smartphones that we have in 2020. If you like small phones, this is arguably the best out there.
However, for those looking for a comprehensive experience, OnePlus Nord might be the best. You will get an HD display, a more varied set of cameras, longer battery life, and feature-rich programs. It’s also a little bit cheaper too!
