KABUL (Reuters) – Afghan President Ashraf Ghani signed a decree on Monday to release the last batch of prisoners, whose release was considered by the Taliban as a condition for the start of peace talks, sources told Reuters.

“It was signed,” a source at the presidential palace said on Monday evening, a day after the Supreme Council of Tribes in Afghanistan, known as the Loya Jirka, recommended the release of 400 Taliban prisoners with extensive records of violence so that peace talks could start in Doha.

Once the prisoners are released, the Taliban will start peace talks within a week, after months of delay since the United States signed a troop withdrawal deal in February.
