Madrid – Dutch Ronald Koeman pledged on Wednesday to “fight to bring Barcelona back to the top”, after he was formally presented as coach of the Catalan team with a contract until 2022 to succeed Kiki Setien, who was sacked after the humiliating exit from the Champions League quarter-finals at the hands of Bayern Munich (2- 8).

Coman said from the stadium of the Catalan club “Camp Nou”, in which he starred as a player, “It is a happy day. Everyone knows what Barcelona was for me. It is my home. It is a challenge and it will not be easy. It will require my best and I love it.”

“It was a dream, and this dream has become a reality. We will fight to get Barcelona back on top,” he revealed.

“FC Barcelona and Ronald Koeman have reached an agreement to train the first team until June 30, 2022,” Barcelona said on Wednesday, two days after the sacking of Setien.

“The Dutchman already has a lot of experience as a coach, with more than 20 years on the bench and eight titles. He comes to Barcelona after having trained in the English Premier League, La Liga, the Dutch League and the Portuguese League, in addition to his training for the Dutch national team,” he added. Coman has trained him since 2018 and was scheduled to lead him until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

For his part, the Dutch Football Association said in a statement on Wednesday, “Ronald Koeman is leaving his position as coach of the Dutch national team. The 57-year-old will start supervising FC Barcelona. Koeman has been an employee (of the Dutch Federation) since February 2018, and he has played for the orange team.” With his supervision, 20 matches. ”

He added that Koeman, who was scheduled to lead the orange team in the European Cup 2020, which was postponed to next year due to the emerging Corona virus, will leave his place to his assistant, Dwight Ludwigs, who will become a key coach, pending the appointment of a new coach at the head of the national team.

In the Dutch Federation’s statement, Koeman thanked the latter, saying, “It was an honor for me to be the national coach of the Netherlands. Koeman is the fifth Dutchman to oversee Barcelona coaching, after Rinus Michels (1971-1975 and 1976-1978), Johan Corriff (1988-1996), Louis van Gaal (1997-2000 and May 2002 until January 2003) and Frank Rijkaard. (2003-2008).

Koman returns to the team, which starred in its ranks as a player between 1989 and 1995 and helped lead it to win the Spanish League title four consecutive times between 1991 and 1994 during the “Dream Team” era under the supervision of his late compatriot Cruyff. Koman played a total of 264 matches with the “Blaugrana” shirt, during which he scored 88 of the 253 goals in his entire professional career, which he made history as the best scorer defender.

The Dutchman had previously returned to Camp Nou after retiring from Feyenoord in 1997, when he assumed the assignment of assistant coach, fellow countryman Louis van Gaal between 1998 and 2000.
