A security researcher got a $ 6,000 bonus after finding that Instagram was keeping photos and private direct messages on its servers long after they were deleted.

Where independent security researcher (Saugat Pokharel) found when he downloaded his data from Instagram – It is a feature that the platform launched in 2018 to comply with new European databases – It contained pictures and private messages with other users that he had previously deleted.

It is not uncommon for companies to store newly deleted data for some time so that it can be properly deleted from their networks, systems and cache, as Instagram said it takes about 90 days for the deleted data to be completely removed from their systems.

But (Saugat Pokharel) found that his data that had been apparently deleted from more than a year ago is still stored on the platform’s servers, and it can be downloaded using the company’s data download tool.

(Saugat Pokharel) reported the bug in October 2019 through Instagram’s bug bounty program and said the bug had been fixed earlier this month.

A spokesperson for TechCrunch’s Instagram platform said: “The researcher reported a problem, where someone’s deleted photos and messages are included in a copy of their information if they use the (Download Your Information) tool on Instagram. We fixed the issue and didn’t see any evidence of abuse. We thank the researcher for informing us of this problem.

It is worth noting that Facebook announced, last Wednesday, the launch of the Reels video sharing service as a feature in the Instagram application, a feature with which it aims to compete with the popular TikTok service in the United States and more than 50 other countries. The new service allows you to create short 15-second videos, edit them and publish them in your Instagram account, and the service is expected to give social media influencers and other creators a new way to create and share short video content.
