Dialogue with Samir: Lessons in Cinema


Within the activities of the first edition of the “Amman Film Festival – The First Film” (to be concluded on August 31, 2020), the Iraqi Swiss director Samir (1955 – photo) will participate tomorrow, Saturday, in a dialogue moderated by the Jordanian-Palestinian director Najwa Najjar under the title «The first and the last ». The date, which takes place at the headquarters of the Royal Film Commission – Jordan, in the presence of no more than 15 people, will also be broadcast on the “Zoom” app.The award-winning filmmaker will take the audience on a journey that begins with his first film, looking at the experiences that influenced his cinematic language, right up to his latest productions. The director shares his knowledge, experiences and lessons learned in his career, reviewing the challenges that have contributed to the maturation of his work as a director. Samir is known for his unique feature films, documentaries and experiments. “Baghdad in my imagination” won the Audience Award at the Solothurn Film Festival for the year 2020, in addition to the Arab Audience Award at the “Washington DC International Film Festival” for the year 2019. In 2014, the documentary “The Iraqi Odyssey” won the “Nate Pack” award. At the “Abu Dhabi Film Festival”, while his documentary “Forget Baghdad” won the Critics’ Week award at the “Locarno International Film Festival” in 2002. His work includes more than 40 short and long feature films for cinema and television. Besides his own projects as a freelance producer and director, he is also known for directing plays and signing visual arts projects.
