The Iranian Security Ministry announced in a statement broadcast on Iranian television on Saturday the arrest of the leader of a US-based “terrorist group” accused of being behind the bombing in the city of Shiraz (south) in 2008 and other attacks were thwarted.
The ministry said that Jamsheed Sharmahdh, leader of the “Tondar Group” who was leading armed and sabotage operations inside Iran, is now in the grip of “Iranian security forces.”
For its part, the Iranian Foreign Ministry sharply criticized Washington for hosting Shahramd and for “supporting well-known terrorists who had adopted a number of terrorist acts inside” the country.
She said in a statement that “the American entity bears responsibility for supporting the terrorist factions and the perpetrators who run from within the United States subversive, armed and terrorist operations against the Iranian people and spill the blood of our citizens.”
A US State Department spokesman said, “We took note of the information related to Sharmhad.” He added that “the Iranian regime has long experience in holding Iranians and foreigners on the basis of false accusations.”
“We urge Iran to adhere to as much transparency as possible and to respect international legal standards,” the State Department spokesman said.
The statement did not clarify the date or place of the arrest of Jamshid Sharmhad, the leader of the “Association of the Kingdom of Iran”, also known as the “Tundar Group” which seeks to topple the regime in the Islamic Republic.
