Doctors at University College London have developed a new treatment that has proven effective in treating breast cancer, as the new treatment requires a single dose of radiation therapy, unlike traditional treatment that takes weeks of time, and can be obtained increasingly across the world, according to a recent study published in the journal. British Medical (BMJ).According to a report by The Independent, Thursday 20 August 2020, researchers have confirmed the long-term effectiveness of a single-dose treatment for breast cancer, a treatment known as Intraoperative Targeted Radiation Therapy (TARGIT-IORT), which is performed immediately after the tumor is removed, through A small, ball-shaped device is placed inside the breast, exactly where the cancer was.

Two treatments at the same time: The treatment takes 20 to 30 minutes to perform, and it eliminates the need for additional hospital visits, which leads to the treatment taking much less time than the patient’s life, and thus enhances her health.

Professor Jayant Vaidya, lead author of the study, said that “with TARGIT-IORT, women can receive both surgery and radiation for breast cancer.” He added, “This reduces the time spent in hospitals, and enables patients to recover more quickly, which means that they can regain their lives faster as well.”

“With the publication of these very positive long-term results, it is becoming clear that this treatment should be much more widely available. Health care providers should be made available and discussed with patients at the time of planning breast cancer surgery.”

It may save thousands of lives: Every year about 55,000 women and 370 men are diagnosed with breast cancer, becoming the most common type of cancer in the United Kingdom, and about 11,500 women and 80 men die in Britain every year from the same disease.

Professor Michael Baum, one of the study’s authors, said: “These results are the highest-level evidence proving not only the effectiveness of TARGIT-IORT, but also that it avoids death from other causes. I am happy that this treatment will benefit millions of patients. Breast cancer around the world. ”

Previous studies revealed that the new treatment for breast cancer has fewer side effects from radiation and less pain, compared to all conventional radiation therapy for breast cancer.
