RT correspondent in Lebanon said today, Thursday, that the Lebanese authorities have arrested 16 people as part of the investigation into the explosion of the port of the capital, Beirut.
The government commissioner to the military court, acting Judge Fadi Akiki, stated that the authorities have so far questioned more than 18 officials from the port and the customs administration, as well as individuals who were assigned tasks related to the maintenance of the warehouse in which the high explosive materials that caused the disaster were deposited.
He added that 16 people are currently arrested pending investigation, in addition to others left under investigation.
He did not name the detainees and said investigations were underway.
On Tuesday, August 4, a violent explosion rocked the port of the Lebanese capital Beirut, reverberating across the city, as the facades of the buildings were smashed and their balconies collapsed.
The Supreme Defense Council in Lebanon declared Beirut, the capital, a disaster city, and submitted a recommendation to the government to declare a state of emergency after the explosion, in which tens of people were killed and thousands injured.
