In a very dangerous atmosphere and amid warnings from the World Health Organization, the United States is reviving Saturday its national day after Friday recorded a new record number of HIV infections. The WHO official in charge of health emergencies warned that "people should wake up, the numbers do not lie and the field situation does not lie."

“Don’t ignore what the numbers tell you”

“It is really time for countries to look at the numbers. Please, do not ignore what the numbers tell you,” said Michael Raine, the WHO’s health emergency officer, on Friday. He added, “People have to wake up. The numbers do not lie and the field situation does not lie.”

He continued, “The World Health Organization is fully aware that there are good reasons for countries that want to restore their economies to the right path (…) But the problem cannot be ignored either, as it (the virus) will not magically disappear.”

The last seven days have been the worst number of injuries worldwide

According to the organization, the last seven days have been the worst in the number of infections (more than 160,000 new infections in the world daily) since the Covid-19 epidemic appeared in China in late 2019, and 60% of the infections so far were recorded in the past month.

وسجّلت United State Friday 57,683 new cases of coronavirus, according to the Johns Hopkins University reference census, are at the highest death toll from daily infections since the outbreak began. The country also recorded 728 new deaths from the disease, according to the same source, raising the total number of deaths to 129,405.

The United States, by far behind the rest of the world, is the country most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, with about 2.8 million infections. The largest number of new infections has been registered in the south and west of the country, which “puts the entire country at risk,” said director of the American Institute of Infectious Diseases, Anthony Fawcci.

Because of the large increase in the number of people afflicted with it, some states decided to slow down the lifting of the closure measures they imposed to stop the spread of the epidemic, as they quickly closed bars and beaches. The Republican Governor of Texas announced that placing the masks is mandatory in public places in this southern state, which is witnessing a large increase in the number of injuries.

“Historic” weekend

The United States is not the only country to ignore WHO warnings. As bars, hotels, hairdressers, cinemas and museums reopen on Saturday in England, in a move that some in Britain consider premature.

The epidemic has claimed 522,246 lives in the world since China officially announced its appearance in December, according to a census of Agence France-Presse according to official sources as of 19:00 GMT Friday. More than ten million 922 thousand and 300 injuries were officially recorded in 196 countries and regions.

The United States is the country most affected by the epidemic, with 129,405 deaths recorded, followed by Brazil (63174 deaths), then Britain (44,131 deaths), Italy (34,833) and France (29,893).

For the first time since the outbreak began, Latin America Friday surpassed Europe in the number of infections with more than 2.7 million infected people, although Europe remains the continent most affected by the epidemic in terms of deaths, with nearly two hundred thousand deaths.

The number of injuries has decreased in Europe

In Europe, a slowdown in the epidemic is confirmed and a decrease in the number of infections recorded in all European countries.

On Friday, the European Commission allowed the use of the anti-retroviral drug Ramsdevir in the European Union, which gave some results in treating people living with the virus.

In France, the fifth country hardest hit by the epidemic (at least 29,893 deaths), the judiciary has opened an investigation into crisis management with former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and former health ministers Olivier Ferrand and Anis Bouzan.

In China, the Beijing municipality, which witnessed in mid-June a jump in the number of Covid-19 injuries, announced Friday that it lifted most restrictions on leaving the city at midnight Saturday (15:00 GMT), confirming that it had managed to control the infection.

After two months without any infection with the Corona virus, the city of 21 million suddenly witnessed a rise in the number of infections last month. At least 331 people were injured.

While the emergence of the virus again in Beijing was attributed to a wholesale market for agricultural products in the capital, China pledged to gradually abolish the slaughter and sale of live poultry in the food market. It is suspected that the live animal market in central Wuhan will be the main source of the epidemic.
