China has threatened retaliation against US legislation ending preferential treatment in trade between the United States and Hong Kong.
China “resolutely opposes and strongly condemns” the signing by the United States on Tuesday of the “Hong Kong Autonomy Act” to become a law, according to a statement posted on its website by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The statement pointed out that Beijing will make the necessary response to protect its legitimate interests, and will impose sanctions against related individuals and entities in the United States.

On Tuesday, the US President signed legislation that would impose sanctions on entities and people in China involved in Beijing’s moves to “remove autonomy from Hong Kong”.

Trump said he signed an executive order to end preferential “special privileges” for Hong Kong, in continuation of the US president’s campaign against Beijing, which he accuses of failing to adequately address the Corona epidemic.
