Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Saturday that general isolation measures imposed to limit the spread of the emerging “corona” virus “kill” and “strangle” the country’s economy.

“Without salaries and jobs, people will die,” Bolsonaro added, referring to restrictions imposed by some states and towns, and said that “general isolation kills”, adding that some politicians have choked the economy by imposing a curfew.

Bolsonaro’s statement comes as the Brazilian economy is expected to contract by 6.4% this year as a result of the pandemic’s hit.

Bolsonaro, who announced that tests had proven “Covid-19”, met with his supporters in the yard of his official residence in Brasilia.

Bolsonaro was putting a muzzle and standing a few meters away from his supporters.

Bolsonaro said he felt well despite the virus and attributed anew his health to the use of the drug hydroxychloroquine to fight Covid-19 despite the lack of scientific evidence for that.

He told his supporters: “I am living proof (of the success of this drug).”
