China summoned the US ambassador to protest the Hong Kong Autonomy Act, which was passed by the US Congress and signed by President Donald Trump, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
“China will take the necessary measures, including imposing sanctions on relevant American entities and individuals, to protect its interests,” said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zi Guang, when meeting with US Ambassador Terry Branstad. On Tuesday, Trump ordered the end of Hong Kong’s special status under US law to punish China for what he called “repressive measures” against Hong Kong, the former British colony, prompting Beijing to warn of retaliatory sanctions.
