A missile landed Monday-Tuesday night in the vicinity of the US embassy in the heavily fortified Green Zone in the middle of # Baghdad, according to security sources told “Agence France Presse”.

This new attack against American interests is the 28th of its kind in seven months in a country in which nearly two weeks ago a government was formed and described as capable of improving relations with Washington and easing tensions between the United States and Iran in Iraq.

An Iraqi security official told “France Press” that “the missile resulted in material damage without causing casualties.”

As in previous attacks against American interests in Iraq, no one has claimed responsibility for this missile strike, but the United States usually accuses the Iraqi factions loyal to Iran of being behind these attacks.

On Sunday, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said that the United States would “expel” Iraq and Syria, the two countries in which Iran is a strong presence.

Iran and its allies will celebrate next Friday, the International Day of Jerusalem, in solidarity with the Palestinians, which was set by the leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, on the last Friday of Ramadan, since 1979.

Chronic hostility between Tehran and Washington has escalated since US President Donald # Trump decided in May 2018 to unilaterally withdraw from the international nuclear deal with Iran signed in 2015 and re-impose severe economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

The situation was exacerbated after the United States assassinated Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad on January 3.

Experts describe the new Iraqi government, formed by former intelligence chief Mustafa al-Kazemi, as a US-Iranian settlement government, after months of tension.

Although attacks against American interests in Iraq have declined in recent weeks, there remains a source of concern for Americans who have hundreds of diplomats on Iraqi soil, in addition to some of the thousands of soldiers whom Parliament voted to expel in January.

It is expected that two delegations, Iraqi and American, will discuss next June the American presence and the partnership between the two countries.
