Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said that Russian doctors will treat all cases of pneumonia patients as possible cases of coronavirus without waiting for the test results to confirm the diagnosis.
“We see that the disease is progressing rapidly, and that he has a specific clinical offer (that allows) to be diagnosed without being confirmed in the laboratory based on the clinical presentation,” Murashko said, in a television interview broadcast Thursday evening.
Murashko echoed earlier comments by doctors in Moscow who were involved in the treatment of coronavirus patients, who said that the vast majority of cases of pneumonia in Russia were probably caused by the emerging virus and should be treated as such.
“The current tests to confirm the occurrence of Covid-19 minutes by 70-80%,” said Dennis Protsenko, chief physician of a prominent hospital in Moscow treating coronavirus patients.
Russian health officials recorded 1786 new cases of the virus today, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 11,917.
The outbreak has increased in Russia in recent weeks, with the number of cases increasing dramatically and doubling every few days.
Kremlin critics doubt official statistics, pointing to an increasing number of cases of pneumonia, and that the number of cases of coronavirus in Russia may be much higher.
