BR Shetty, founder of the NMC Health group, which was put under British custody last week and facing criminal charges, said he had traveled to India in early February for personal reasons.
Shetty told the Emirati newspaper, “The National” that he left the United Arab Emirates to Mangalore on February 7 to be with his brother with cancer, and he died earlier this month at the age of 82.
Shetty added to the newspaper: “My brother was sick, which is why I came in February and he died two weeks ago.”
He added that once the travel restrictions due to the Corona virus are over and the flights return, I will return to the Emirates. He said that he is only with his wife in India, while the rest of his family is in Abu Dhabi.
Reports indicated that Shetty fled to India, as legal and operational challenges escalated with regard to his two companies, NMC Health and Finablr, both of which are listed in London.
Shetty said that he was “silent about the allegations facing me and my companies, and I did not answer, because I do not know the facts, and I do not know what happened.”
Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank began last week a criminal legal process with the Abu Dhabi Attorney General against a number of individuals associated with NMC Health.
The bank said in a statement on Wednesday that this measure is in line with the bank’s goal to protect its interests.
