EuroPulse radio station reported that experts have identified in the study the most beneficial products for the human brain in the diet of the Mediterranean population.
According to the results of a ten-year study and published in the scientific journal of the Alzheimer’s Society, in which many people who follow a different diet participated, American and Spanish scientists reached a conclusion, indicating that fish and olive oil are the best products of the Mediterranean diet to maintain brain function.
The participants were divided into two groups: the first with a genetic predisposition to the emergence of Alzheimer’s disease, and the other without this genetic characteristic. The daily diet facts were recorded for all participants, who were periodically tested for cognitive abilities.
It turned out that those who had adhered to the Mediterranean diet, retained their mental functions for a longer period, and were less likely to show signs of Alzheimer’s, regardless of whether they were prepared to contract it.
Scientists have followed how nine elements of the Mediterranean diet affect the brain: fruits, uncooked vegetables, whole grains (not peeled), nuts, legumes, fish, and olive oil. Red meat and alcohol consumption was limited.
Among the people who partly adhered to the Mediterranean diet, those who consumed lots of fish and olive oil got the best results. Study participants with a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s disease showed that the symptoms of this disease appeared to them by 19 percent less than others.
