Riyadh– A Saudi official announced, on Friday evening, that Tarawih prayers could be suspended in the Kingdom’s mosques during the month of Ramadan, in the event of a Corona virus crisis, unless instructions were issued by the relevant authorities to the contrary.
This came in a telephone intervention on the official “Saudi Arabia” channel, conducted by Muhammad al-Aqil, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs for Call and Guidance in the Kingdom.
In response to a question about whether the suspension of prayers, including the Tarawih prayer, will continue if the Corona crisis continues, Al-Aqil said: “Yes, because the suspension was caused by protecting the worshipers from transmitting the infection with their closeness; therefore the suspension will continue unless the Senior Scholars Authority and the concerned authorities issue a decision other than that”.
Regarding the performance of prayers in the Two Holy Mosques, the Under-Secretary General for the Two Holy Mosques Ahmed Al-Mansoori said, “There is a supreme committee that assesses all steps regarding performing Tarawih prayers and performing in the Sacred Mosque during the next month of Ramadan.”
Al-Mansouri added, in a telephone interview on the same channel, that “the Saudi monarch, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, directed immediately the implementation of all what the committee recommends immediately, in the interest of the safety of citizens and residents.”
He pointed out that “the recommendations that are issued depend on the evaluation of the general situation, which will be from good to better,” indicating that, once issued, implementation will be in the light of it.
On March 18, the Saudi Council of Senior Religious Scholars (a high governmental government) decided to suspend the holding of prayers for the group and Friday in the mosques of the Kingdom, as part of measures to combat the spread of the Corona virus.
Earlier Friday, the Saudi Ministry of Health announced the registration of 3 deaths in Koruna, bringing the total to 47 cases, while 364 new cases were recorded, bringing the total to 3651, including 685 recoverers.
Several Islamic countries decided to close mosques and all places of worship and suspend prayer temporarily in the framework of measures to confront the Corona virus, most notably Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait and the Emirates. – (Anatolia)
