The Governor of the Banque du Liban Riad Salameh announced that “the new foreign exchange unit with the bank will deal in banknotes” at the market price “and will choose the currency exchange with whom it works.”

Salama told Reuters that “the official peg of the Lebanese currency will be maintained in transactions of banks and vital imports: medicines, fuel and wheat.”

He added that this policy would allow “making foreign exchange available and easing inflationary pressures.”
