The German city of Munich is still awaiting the granting of final approval as an interface to host the European Nations Cup soccer matches, which were postponed for the next year in light of the outbreak of the emerging Corona virus crisis.

A spokesman for the Munich Sports Department said on Sunday, “The course of the additional work for Munich, the state capital, is currently being examined internally.”

Munich is one of 12 cities that have been preparing to host the Euro 2020 events, which were postponed for an entire year due to the Corona pandemic.

Munich was due to host several matches in Euro 2020, including two group games, Germany against France and Portugal, as well as a quarter-final match.

Earlier, a Russian official of the European Union of Football Association (UEFA) said that the confederation’s decision regarding the hosting cities of Euro 2020, which was postponed for the next year, is expected to be issued on April 30.

Alexei Sorokin told the Russian news agency “TAS” last Thursday that new cities might be chosen to host the European Nations Cup if any of the cities that were to host the original version of the tournament were withdrawn.

“Everything will be clear on April 30, when we become aware of the cities that will continue to host Euro matches, as well as the cities that decided to withdraw,” the Russian official said.

Sorokin is a member of the Executive Committee of UEFA and he chairs the organizing committee for the continental championship matches in St. Petersburg, Russia.

“All of the host cities participate in video conference conversations periodically, and we have talks with all of them. All of the host cities have time to think about it before the end of the month,” he added.

“If one of the host cities decides to withdraw, there are many options on the table. There will be either a new host city or a process of redistribution between the cities that were previously confirmed.”

Sorokin stressed that his country can help other cities, in the wake of Russia’s announcement of its willingness to host the European Cup alone, after two years of hosting the World Cup.

The next European Nations Cup competitions will be held in 12 European cities: Amsterdam, Baku, Bilbao, Budapest, Bucharest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Glasgow, London, Munich, Rome and St. Petersburg, and it is assumed that all cities will confirm their readiness to participate in hosting the tournament next year.

It was recently decided to postpone the Euro 2020 to next year in the hope of giving the opportunity to the domestic league competitions in Europe to complete the season’s competitions that are currently suspended due to the Corona virus crisis.

UEFA revealed earlier that it is communicating with all 12 host cities in order to ensure that the championship competitions can be held at the same time next year.

He explained: “UEFA is in contact with all 12 cities to coordinate on this matter, and any developments will be announced in due course.”

“Euro 2020 will take place between June 11 and July 11, 2021, and we intend to apply the same schedule and in the stadiums themselves.”
