South Korea yesterday played down the importance of information that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had recently undergone surgery and that his health was dangerous, in light of questions from observers about his absence from important ceremonies last week in Pyongyang. On April 15, North Korea celebrated the 108th anniversary of the birth of Kim Jong-un’s grandfather and founder of the regime, Kim Il-sung. This history is one of the most important political stations in North Korea, however, Kim Kung-un did not appear in any of the photos released by the official media of the celebrations.

NK Daily, which is run by defected North Koreans, wrote that Kim underwent surgery in April due to cardiovascular problems, and that he was recovering at a villa in Fyon-gun County. It quoted an unidentified North Korean source as saying, “The reason for the emergency treatment in the cardiovascular systems that Kim was subjected to was his extensive consumption of tobacco, obesity and fatigue.” The accuracy of this information has not been confirmed, but it has sparked a wave of speculation.

CNN quoted a US official as saying that Washington was “studying information” stating that Kim Jong-un was “in grave danger after surgery”, without indicating whether the “information” was based on an article that ” Key Daily. ”

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the South Korean presidency said in a statement: “We have no confirmation, and no special movement has been spotted in North Korea.” Some South Korean officials also questioned the reliability of the Daily NK newspaper.

Covering events in North Korea in general is a difficult task, especially regarding Kim’s private life, as it is one of the most important secrets to the system. The South Korean Unification Minister, who is interested in issues of Korean relations as well as the defense minister, declined to comment on the issue.

But Moon Chung-s, the security advisor to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, told Agence France-Presse that he was not aware of anything special related to Kim Jong-un’s health. The last time the North Korean media released information related to Kim’s activities was on April 12. Nor is this the first time that his absence has raised suspicion.

Ahn Chan-il, a fugitive from North Korea who works as a researcher in Seoul, said, “There is no confirmed information at this stage and it is too early to produce conclusions about his health.”
