A massive comet called “Atlas” five times the size of Jupiter and about half the size of the sun, will appear brighter than Venus from Earth by the end of this April.According to the “Daily Mail” website, the comet is now close to the orbit of Mars, but it is increasing in speed as it makes its way toward the sun, and will approach the Earth during the current month, and when it heads towards the inner solar system, it will become one of the brightest things in the night sky. .
This comet was first discovered in December, as the diameter of the invading atmosphere surrounding the comet swelled to a staggering 447,387 miles.
In contrast, the sun’s diameter is 865,370 miles, Jupiter’s diameter is 86,881 miles, and the Earth is only 7,917 miles.
It should be noted that this comet does not pose any danger on Earth because even at its nearest point it will be more than 72 million miles away from the planet, but it will be very bright.
Michael Gagger from Austria, who took pictures of the object, said that a comet has an atlas of a tail the same size as its atmosphere, while the recent ATLAS system in Hawaii discovered it and took its name from the first letters of the system.
The last bright comet visible without a telescope in the Northern Hemisphere was Hale-Bopp in 1997, making this a “rare event” for astronomers.
When it was discovered on December 28, 2019, it was dim and required a telescope, but as it approached it became brighter and can now be seen with binoculars.
Atlas is currently the largest green body in the solar system and its color comes from the diatomic carbon, which is a common molecule in comets, and emits a beautiful green glow when it is in the form of gas in space. It has seen an increase in brightness by 4000 times since it was first discovered and can be seen by eye Abstract by the end of April.
