Doctors have confirmed that the second patient in history has fully recovered from AIDS.
According to Lancet, the doctors’ report confirms that the two patients underwent a bone marrow transplant. The first patient, Timothy Rey Brown, was from Berlin and recovered from the disease 13 years ago. As for the second patient, who was called “London patient”, without giving his name, the medical team headed by Rapindra Kupta from Cambridge University discovered the virus had disappeared from his blood 30 months ago.
The New York Times, for its part, notes that the patient is Adam Casteljo (40 years) from Venezuela and has been suffering from AIDS since 2003. Doctors diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2012 and underwent bone marrow transplant for treatment, but it appears that the operation helped him recover from HIV as well.
