“The International Athletics Federation welcomes negotiations with the International Olympic Committee over the postponement of the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020 and has written to the International Olympic Committee to share the concerns of the world of sports,” the IAAF Council said in a statement.

He added: “We are ready to work with the International Olympic Committee and put all sports (athletics) on alternative dates, including those scheduled for 2021.”

The federation indicated that it had started discussions with the organizing committee for the World Championship in Oregon: “regarding the possibility of postponing the Olympic Games until next year.”

He continued, “They led their discussions with their key partners and assured us that they will work with all of their partners and sponsors to ensure that Oregon is able to host the World Athletics Championships on alternative dates if necessary.”
