And the International Olympic Committee announced, on Tuesday, its approval to postpone the Tokyo Olympics for a year to be held in 2021, due to the spread of the Corona virus and the demand of many countries to postpone.
Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, said on Wednesday that the new date for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will need sacrifices and concessions from all sides.
Bach stressed the necessity of holding the Games before the end of the summer of 2021, and indicated that the possible dates will not necessarily be limited to the summer months.
He explained, “Our mission is to organize games and turn athletes’ dreams into reality.”
A working group of the International Olympic Committee will work to determine the new date for the Games amid a busy schedule of sporting events, after the epidemic postponed other tournaments, most notably the European Football Championship 2020.
The decision to postpone was a severe blow to Japan, which invested $ 12 billion to prepare for the Games, as well as to the prestige of the Olympic Movement and Bach himself, who was subject to sharp criticism for not acting quickly in the face of the global crisis.
