An important source in the government told Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed that Pompeo had failed to contain the crisis between Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and his rival, Abdullah Abdullah, because each one of them had practiced behind his position.

The Afghan President stressed, during the meeting with Pompeo, the need to form a government that includes all Afghans, but Abdullah Abdullah insisted on the continuation of the national unity government, where his share would be fifty percent, with the condition that the position of Prime Minister be for him, but Ghani rejected that. Thus Pompeo failed to contain the crisis between them.

For its part, the US State Department announced reducing US aid to Afghanistan by one billion dollars, while preparing for a similar reduction in 2021, due to the ongoing political crisis.

The State Department said, in a statement, that Pompeo visited Kabul yesterday, Monday, to contain the crisis between Ghani and Abdullah, but that attempt did not succeed, and therefore Washington announced the reduction of its aid to Kabul and reconsideration, expressing regret at the failure of Afghan leaders to form a comprehensive government.

The State Department also stressed that the differences between the political leadership in Afghanistan harm US interests, which forced Washington to reduce aid.

On the military front, the American statement said that Washington will not assist the military operations that are conducted for political goals, nor the leadership that orders such operations, nor will it accept the idea of ​​parallel governments.

The State Department also blamed the Afghan leaders for not being able to form a comprehensive negotiating body with the Taliban, pointing out that if the Afghan leadership were able to form a comprehensive government, they would be able to work to establish security and stability, and move forward in the reconciliation process, and then the United States of America To reconsider its current decision.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived on a surprise visit to Afghanistan on Monday, in order to discuss the political crisis and work on the historic consensus between Washington and the Taliban, which occurred in Doha on February 29.

The Afghan presidential spokesman, Siddiq Siddiqui, said in a tweet on Twitter, yesterday, that the Afghan president met Pompeo, and discussed with him about the developments of reconciliation and future steps on it, and the regional level consensus on reconciliation, adding that the two sides also discussed the political and security situation in Afghanistan .

Also, a spokesman for Abdullah Abdullah Mujibur Rahman Rahimi said, in a statement, that the American minister also met Abdullah Abdullah and discussed with him reconciliation and the overall situation in the country, noting that the two parties stressed the need to solve the political dilemma in the country.

Zalmay Khalilzad, the US Special Envoy for Reconciliation, had previously attempted to launch the process of releasing the Taliban and government detainees in accordance with the agreement between the Taliban and Washington, and he also tried to find a solution to the differences between President Ashraf Ghani and his rival Abdullah Abdullah, but those efforts did not come to fruition.

Pompeo’s unannounced visit to Kabul to find solutions to the two issues and accelerate work to implement the consensus that occurred in Doha between the Taliban and Washington, which was supposed to release five thousand prisoners to the Taliban in exchange for the movement to release one thousand prisoners, but the Afghan president’s refusal to obstruct the process Reconciliation, and thus did not start the second stage of the process, which is the Afghan-Afghan dialogue that was set on the tenth of this March.
