FIFA statement on the postponement of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and the 2023 AFC Asian Cup

FIFA, in agreement with the AFC, has announced an official proposal to postpone the Asian qualifying matches to the 2022 World Cup and Asian Cup 2023.

FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) held a meeting at FIFA headquarters on Thursday to discuss football activities in Asia.

The International Federation announced through its website the following:

“For both FIFA and AFC, the health and safety of all those involved in football matches remains a top priority. On this basis, the member associations concerned will now be notified of a formal proposal to postpone the upcoming matches in the Asian qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup and Asian Cup 2023.

FIFA and AFC will give a briefing on these matches in the coming days after consulting the AFC member associations.

Other topics discussed included South Korea and China in the Women’s Olympic Qualifiers, as well as the AFC Futsal Championship Turkmenistan 2020.

FIFA will continue to monitor the situation regarding COVID-19 in cooperation with WHO, continental and member national federations. Information about other international matches may also be provided by the relevant continental or local federation.
