Dr. Hani Al-Abdali, a consultant and head of the brain, nerves, brain and spinal cord and spinal cord injuries in the city, said: King Saud Medical City has recorded many cases during the past year of this wrong habit, which may lead to stroke and major vascular abnormalities feeding the brain.

He added: This habit is followed by a lot as it helps to loosen the vertebrae of the neck to loosen it and get rid of any pain or problems in it; but the crackling of the neck violently and suddenly exposes the owner to serious damage that reaches paralysis.

And Abizaid: The neck contains seven cervical vertebrae from the top of the spine and between each vertebra and other cartilages to facilitate their movement, as well as the nerves feeding the arms and ending at the hands, and therefore when the vertebrae are exposed to any problem it affects the spine and spinal cord dangerously.

The neck as if broken; the diagnosis is made by the patient undergoing a clinical examination with the work of some rays, and he needs to be completely comfortable with wearing a plastic neck for six weeks until the ligaments heal, with the use of muscle relaxants and anti-pain drugs.

Al-Abdali said: A cervical slipped disc occurs due to the erratic and sudden movement of the neck, as it develops a cervical slipped disc, and the person feels pain and weakness in the arms; Herniated disc if slipping occurs on the spinal cord, leading to quadriplegic paralysis if it is not quickly relieved, and slipping affects the nerves in the spinal cord.

On the risks of “crackling the neck”, he indicated that it may cause a fracture to the neck; the vertebrae may be exposed to the fracture, which causes the patient to feel unbearable pain in the neck. Treatment in this case requires surgical intervention to fix the vertebrae with a slide and nails; however, it is often a very dangerous process because it may necessitate opening next to the spinal cord.

And he added: The methods of treatment differ according to the degree of slipping and the resulting damage, and most often need nourishing and strengthening drugs for nerves, in addition to pain relievers with complete comfort; but in advanced cases, surgical intervention is used to treat slipping.
