FIFA announced today, Thursday, that Australia has won the Women’s World Cup 2022 at the expense of Russia, thereby succeeding Spain, which hosted the last edition of the tournament in 2018 on the island of Tenerife. This is the second time that Australia will host the Women’s World Cup after hosting the 1994 edition. Australia is the current runner-up for the tournament after losing in the 2018 final to United States, the champion, which is Spain’s third place. The tournament, in which 12 teams will participate and will qualify for one year, will be held in Sydney.

The president of the International Basketball Federation, Malian Haman Niang, highlighted in a statement the distinguished presentation made by both candidates, and hoped that the 2022 World Cup is “the greatest event in the history of women’s basketball.”
