The probe (the size of a car) has been wandering around the Gale crater on Mars for more than 7 years, and all the great photos were taken during the study period on the surface of the rocky planet. However, the discovery of some simple organic compounds, may be the most important discovery to date.
The compounds, called thiophenes (thiophene), were found on the ground in coal and crude oil, and also strangely within the white truffle, as well as the fungus.
And a new study assumed that its discovery on the surface of Mars corresponds to the existence of early life on this planet. The study suggests that the biological process, most likely involving bacteria, may have played a role in the presence of the organic compound in the soil of Mars.
Washington State scientists have found that ancient bacteria, which may have existed more than 3 billion years ago, when Mars was warmer and wetter, could facilitate a chemical process that leads to “thiophene”. There are also other ways in which the thiophene is destroyed by bacteria.
However, scientists cannot rule out the possibility that some other non-biological process may lead to the emergence of compounds on Mars. One possible explanation is that it was taken there on a meteorite that landed on the planet.
More evidence may be obtained when the next spacecraft, Rosalind Franklin, touches Mars. The mobile science laboratory is expected to be launched in July 2020, and will carry the Mars Organic Molecule Analyst, MOMA, which will be able to collect generally larger particles.
