Award-winning American playwright Terence McNally died on Tuesday at the age of 81 from an emerging coronavirus (Covid-19).

“We have lost one of New York’s greats, and he is one of our most elite intellectuals,” New York City Mayor Bill de Palacio told a news conference.

Di Palacio added that McNally “wrote some of the greatest plays in modern memory, but he also worked hard for the city of New York to be better and America better.”

The New York Times and other US media reported that McNally, who survived lung cancer, had a chronic pneumonia.
