Officials at the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed on Tuesday, January 21, that an American in Washington state was infected with the deadly and contagious corona virus circulating in China.
The first American infected with the deadly mysterious virus, a US resident in his thirties, was taken to hospital but is now in “good” condition, and is being closely monitored at the Provincial-Everett Regional Medical Center.
The patient arrived in the United States on January 15, from the Chinese city of Wuhan, a day before the examination was performed and before symptoms appeared, but he had symptoms including coughing, runny nose and fever, after watching the media coverage of the virus online. It was found that he had not visited any of the markets at the epidemic, according to state health officials.
Health officials said the patient visited doctors on January 16 and underwent testing to confirm his diagnosis on Monday, January 20.
Following the identification of this first American patient, all flights were redirected: from Wuhan to the United States, to 3 airports set up last week for examination – LAX, San Francisco, and JFK.
Washington officials do not consider the American man a serious illness, but they take the necessary precautions.
With the addition of the United States, the Corona virus that appeared in Chinese Wuhan has spread to 5 countries, including Thailand, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
(So far) the CDC has examined more than 12,000 travelers, said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. “However, none of them were referred to hospitals or quarantined through examination.”
The first US patient with the Corona virus arrived at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, but did not fly directly from Wuhan. He did not pass through the examination devices at the airport, and both the CDC and Washington State officials confirmed that, due to his arrival before the symptoms appeared, the examination was not able to consider him a potential patient.
Officials in China stressed that the Corona virus, which may lead to life-threatening respiratory infections, can be transmitted from person to person, including through saliva.
It is reported that a prominent expert said that the Corona virus had been stalking animals for decades, before it adapted to humans.
