“The coalition is ready to discuss with the government of Iraq about the role of its forces,” James Jeffrey, the US special envoy to Syria and the international coalition against ISIS, told a news conference on Thursday.

The US envoy pointed to “Iraqi concerns about the return of ISIS.”

Jeffrey suggested that “NATO have a greater role in Iraq.”

Referring to the parliament’s decision to expel American forces in Iraq, Jeffrey commented: “The parliament’s decision is not binding on us, and the agreement on our forces was with the Baghdad government.”

The Iraqi parliament took the decision in the wake of the American assassination of Iranian General, Qasim Soleimani, in front of Baghdad Airport on January 3.

And Jeffrey announced that “the international coalition will meet next Wednesday in Copenhagen to discuss the future of the war against ISIS.”

In the Syrian file, the American envoy emphasized that “the international coalition continues its operations against ISIS in Syria.”

He stated that “pressure must be taken on Bashar al-Assad’s regime to stop the attacks on Idlib.”
