France, Spain and America are in the lead

The World Tourism Organization revealed in its latest reports that the growth in the number of tourists in the world recorded a slowdown in 2019 to 4% due to the global economic slowdown and the geopolitical conditions and Brexit, according to the French Agency

The report indicated that in 2017 and 2018 the number of tourists in the world increased respectively by 7% and 6%

The report showed that France, Spain and the United States are among the top countries visited by the largest number of tourists, according to the temporary figures available for 2019.

“The slowdown is linked to the performance of the global economy with an economic growth of about 3%,” said World Market Organization official Sandra Carvao, noting also “the strong concern associated with Brexit and the weakness of the German economy” and the impact of “geopolitical problems”.

The World Tourism Organization added that the bankruptcy of British travel agent Thomas Cook, also contributed to the slowdown.

But Carvao played down the importance of this slowdown after two years of “phenomenal growth that far exceeded expectations.”

She explained that 2017 and 2018 “were not the usual growth years, we are returning to historical levels of global tourism growth”

The numbers recorded that the regions most affected by the slowdown are Europe, where the number of tourists increased by 4% compared to 6% in 2018 and Asia-Pacific (+ 5% compared to + 7% in 2018) due to the repercussions of the political crisis in Hong Kong.

The international official indicated that Saudi Arabia’s opening of its doors reinforced the increase in the number of tourists and the recovery in the Middle East (+ 8% of tourists compared to + 3% in 2018), especially with the ambitious plan launched by Saudi Arabia to attract foreign tourists.
