Google has announced the arrival of a new update for Chromebooks designed for students and schools, such as the company update released last year. It also announced that new Chromebooks will get ChromeOS updates until 2028.

Now devices released in 2020 and beyond will receive automatic updates for a longer period. The new Lenovo Chromebook 10e tablet and Acer Chromebook 712 will receive automatic updates until June 2028.

Thanks to an illustration from Android Central, we have a better idea of what the above means. Although two Chromebooks will already be updated until 2028, not all Chromebooks released this year will get updates for that long. It all depends on the hardware used on these Chromebooks, and some upcoming Chromebooks this year may be new to the market, but they may come with older hardware.

For example, if new Chromebooks arrive next year with the same hardware used in Chromebooks now announced, they will only receive seven years of updates. Google also announced that the Admin Console has been improved to provide faster load times and the ability to search and filter on the device. You will also be able to see the dates of Automatic Update Expiration for these devices.

Initially, Google offered three years of guaranteed updates to legacy Chromebooks computers before eventually extending this period to six years, thus giving schools a good idea of how long they would continue to invest.
