Dutch cyclist Edwin Streifer died of his wounds after falling in the eleventh stage of the Dakar Desert Rally, on January 17, in Saudi Arabia.
Streifer, 48, fell from sand dunes and received a number of terrible injuries. He suffered a fracture in one of the neck vertebrae, and his heartbeat stopped for 10 minutes, before rescuers were able to restore the pulse, and then was transferred by helicopter to the hospital in a critical condition .
According to the website, “rtlnieuws.nl” the rider was moved to the Netherlands on January 22, and died at dawn Friday, after his third participation in the Dakar races.
This is the second death in the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia, after the Portuguese cyclist Paulo Gonsalves, 40, who died after falling in the seventh stage of the race between Riyadh and Wadi Al-Dawasir, last Sunday.
